Taboo costs for CBC
Weekend conference at golf spa
By PETER ZIMONJIC, NATIONAL BUREAU
While CBC employees were locked out of their jobs in a 2005 labour dispute
their managers were spending thousands of dollars at a luxury golf spa.
Do***ents obtained by Sun Media through Access to Information show that
five
managers of the taxpayer-funded CBC spent $9,559.17 for a weekend at the
Taboo
Resort, Golf and Spa during the 2005 dispute.
The Gravenhurst, Ont., resort is the home course for Canadian golfer Mike
Weir. One the company's website Weir describes the quality of the golf
course:
"Each time I play here, the beauty overwhelms me. The course is both
playable
and challenging."
... The stay at Taboo took place in 2005 when the CBC locked out about
5,500
of its union employees without pay in the middle of a labour dispute. The
lockout forced many CBC staff to look for alternative employment to
survive
until the lockout ended on Oct. 11.
According to do***ents, it cost $4,424.25 for the five CBC managers to
stay at
Taboo for three nights. The rest of the costs for the trip were individual
expenses made by the managers and submitted to the CBC. The expenses
include
bills for golf balls, car rentals, ****ter fees, food, drink and phone
charges.
Katherine Heath-Eves, a CBC spokeswoman, explained that the managers went
to
Taboo to attend a conference run by the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance.
